What is Panchakarma?
Cleansing, like nourishment, is essential for our health. Ayurveda therefore advises to fast/cure once in a while.
Panchakarma literally means 'five actions’ and refers to the five purification procedures that help to remove accumulated toxins (ama) from the body. Wrong nutrition, Stress and environmental factors lead to an accumulation of waste products, which disrupts energy balance and health. Panchakarma is a way to reverse this process.
Of 5 Purification methods
- Vamana (therapeutic vomiting)
- Helps remove excess mucus and toxins from the digestive tract.
- Virechana (laxative method)
- Cleanses intestines and liver through oral administration of herbs.
- Suffice it to (medicinal enemas)
- Cleanses colon and nourishes the body through rinses/nourishing enemas through the rectum (anal administration of herbs).
- Nasya (nasal cleaning)
- Cleanses the sinuses through rinses, Herbal Oils, or steaming; improves breathing and mental clarity.
- Raktamokshana (blood purification)
- Used for purifying blood in certain conditions, such as high blood pressure, skin problems or inflammation
Note: Both vamana than raktamokshana should be done under the supervision of an experienced and competent physician.
Benefits of Panchakarma

Who is Panchakarma suitable for?
Panchakarma is basically suitable for anyone who wants to cleanse his/her body and restore balance. Some book a cure to undergo a spiritual metamorphosis: to create a new, pure phase of their lives. Generally, Panchakarma is recommended for digestive problems, fatigue, stress, skin problems or chronic conditions. The cure can also be used around the seasonal changes (especially spring and autumn).
